Our department serves as the backbone of the school, supporting students, parents, teachers, and staff to create an enriching and productive learning environment. Meet our Team

Dr. Kenneth L. Bowen, Principal

Dr. Kenneth L. Bowen is a highly accomplished and respected professional with a diverse range of expertise and a strong commitment to excellence in his field. As an experienced leader, educator, and researcher, Dr. Bowen has made significant contributions to the field of education.

Dr. Bowen’s educational journey began with a Bachelor’s degree in History with a concentration in Secondary Social Studies Education from The University of North Carolina at Pembroke. Inspired by a thirst for knowledge and a passion for making a difference, he pursued further education and obtained a Master’s degree in School Administration from UNCP. Driven by a desire to delve deeper into his field of interest, he continued his academic pursuit and earned a Doctorate in Educational Leadership from East Carolina University. In addition to his degrees, Dr. Bowen has earned a certificate in Advanced Placement United States History from The University of North Carolina at Charlotte, a certificate in Online Learning from Duke University, and a certificate in Mental Health in the Workplace from Walden University. 

With his strong educational foundation, Dr. Bowen embarked on a career dedicated to advancing the boundaries of knowledge and making a positive impact. Over the years, he has held various influential roles, including Consultant, Assistant Superintendent, Chief Officer for Student Learning & Accountability, Executive Director, Director of Institutional Planning & Research, Director of Grant Development & Research, Director of Career & Technical Programs, High School Principal, Assistant Principal, Teacher, Coach, & Mentor. In each capacity, Dr. Bowen demonstrated exceptional leadership skills and a keen ability to drive innovation and change.

Driven by a genuine passion for sharing knowledge and nurturing the next generation of professionals, he has also been actively involved in teaching and mentoring others, inspiring them to excel and make meaningful contributions in their respective fields. Beyond his academic and research pursuits, Dr. Bowen is known for his strong interpersonal skills and collaborative approach. He is highly regarded for his ability to build strong relationships with colleagues, collaborators, and stakeholders, fostering an environment of trust and cooperation.

Dr. Bowen’s contributions have not gone unnoticed, as he has been recognized with several accolades and honors for his outstanding achievements and contributions to his field. These accolades serve as a testament to his unwavering dedication, expertise, and commitment to excellence.

Outside of his professional endeavors, Dr. Bowen is known for his philanthropic activities and community engagement. He believes in giving back to society and actively participates in initiatives that make a positive impact on the lives of others.  With an impressive track record of accomplishments and a relentless drive to make a difference, Dr. Bowen is excited about moving to Columbus County and serving as Principal of East Columbus Jr/Sr High School. Dr. Bowen has one daughter and a future wife and step-daughter. In his spare time, he enjoys landscaping and being outdoors. 

 

Ms. Sherone Hough, Assistant Principal

 

Introducing Ms. Sherone Hough: A Dedicated Educator and Curriculum Advocate 📚

Hailing from the charming town of Whiteville, NC, Ms. Sherone Hough’s journey in education is a testament to her unwavering dedication and passion for shaping young minds. As the daughter of the late James Reginald Carter and the indomitable Mrs. Queen Tarte of Riegelwood, NC, Ms. Hough’s roots are firmly anchored in a legacy of strength, determination, and nurturing spirit.

In her role as a mother, Ms. Hough finds boundless joy in her son, Christopher Jamon Hough. Guiding him through life’s lessons and opportunities has been both her privilege and her greatest source of inspiration.

As the eldest of her two sisters, Sandy and Edna Carter, Ms. Hough has embraced her leadership role not only in her family but also in her professional life. Armed with a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education from Bennett College in Greensboro and a Masters in Educational Leadership from Coastal Carolina University, she possesses a strong academic foundation to match her immense heart.

With a commendable 24 years of experience in the field of education, Ms. Hough’s impact has been profound. Her journey began in the Darlington County School District, where she spent two decades serving in various capacities. From a dedicated science teacher to a visionary Curriculum Coordinator for Math and Science, and even as a district facilitator, Ms. Hough’s contributions have touched countless lives. An Assistant Principal role at Darlington Middle School for eight years further showcased her commitment to fostering a positive educational environment.

In 2019, Ms. Hough returned to her North Carolina roots, joining the Whiteville City School District. As an Assistant Principal at Central Middle School and Edgewood Elementary School, she continued to embody her motto, “Each one, teach one, to reach one.” Her passion for curriculum development shines through, as she tirelessly collaborates with teachers and students to unlock their full potential.

Ms. Hough’s journey is a testament to her belief that education is a beacon of hope, a path to empowerment, and a journey of growth. Her legacy is built on her unceasing dedication, her nurturing spirit, and her determination to uplift those around her. In every classroom, every initiative, and every moment she spends nurturing the minds of tomorrow, Ms. Sherone Hough stands as a beacon of inspiration and transformation.

Mrs. Megan Locklear, Assistant Principal

Meet Mrs. Megan Locklear, an accomplished and dedicated educator with a wealth of experience across various educational levels and roles. With a profound commitment to fostering growth in her students and a passion for learning, Mrs. Locklear has left an indelible mark on the field of education.

Mrs. Locklear’s journey in education has been marked by her versatile expertise, ranging from early childhood education to elementary and higher education. She firmly believes in cultivating a supportive and engaging learning environment that nurtures the intellectual, social, and emotional development of each student under her guidance.

Beyond the classroom, Mrs. Locklear has taken on influential leadership roles that have enabled her to make a lasting impact on both students and fellow educators. She has served as a mentor to colleagues, actively participated in professional development initiatives, and demonstrated her commitment to the advancement of educational practices.

Her extensive experience also includes roles such as the First Americans’ Pathway to STEM Success Project Coordinator at Robeson Community College, where she exhibited exceptional leadership by managing Success Coaches and driving transformative change. She excelled in overseeing departmental budgets, creating reports, and leading with a growth-oriented mindset.

Mrs. Locklear’s educational journey includes a Master’s degree in School Administration from the University of North Carolina at Pembroke, a Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education and Teaching from the University of Phoenix, and a Bachelor of Science in Psychology from the University of North Carolina at Pembroke.

In addition to her educational pursuits, Mrs. Locklear is a devoted wife and proud mother of two daughters. Her family provides her with unwavering support and serves as a driving force behind her dedication to excellence in all aspects of her life.

Mrs. Megan Locklear is a true exemplar of a lifelong learner, dedicated educator, and proactive leader. Her commitment to nurturing students’ growth, her transformative leadership, and her continuous pursuit of knowledge make her an invaluable asset to the educational community. Her associations with professional organizations such as the National Association of Elementary School Principals, AISES, and the National Education Association reflect her dedication to ongoing growth and contribution to the field of education.

 

Mr. Jason Nance, Athletic Director

 

Jason Nance hails from Evergreen, NC, where his journey in education and athletics began. He graduated from West Columbus High School, laying the foundation for a promising future. His love for baseball led him to Southeastern Community College and later to Barton College, where he continued to excel on the baseball diamond.

At Barton, Jason earned a degree in Criminal Justice with a minor in History, demonstrating his commitment to both academics and sports. After graduating, he continued his educational pursuits, obtaining K-12 Special Education certification, 6-12 Social Studies certification, and K-12 Health/PE certification.

With an impressive 22-year teaching career, the majority of which has been dedicated to Columbus County Schools, Jason has made a lasting impact on students’ lives. Over the last decade, he has been an integral part of the Eastern community, initially serving as a Middle School Health and PE teacher before transitioning to his current role as a High School Health/PE teacher and Athletic Director.

In recognition of his dedication and excellence, Jason was honored as the Hallsboro Teacher of the Year for the 2019-2020 school year. His passion for education extends beyond the classroom, as he has coached various sports, including volleyball, basketball, football, baseball, and softball, proving his versatility and commitment to students’ overall development.

A highly motivated professional, Jason brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to his role as Athletic Director. He is driven by the desire to inspire students to reach their full potential in every aspect of their lives.

Outside of the school environment, Jason finds joy in golfing and cherishing moments with his family and friends. His family includes two daughters, one son, and a loving wife, who brings two stepchildren into their united family. Jason’s dedication to both his personal and professional life exemplifies his commitment to building strong relationships and nurturing the growth of those around him.
